There are a wide variety of addiction treatment programs available for recovering addicts and alcoholics, and Christian rehab centers offer some of the more unique and innovative ones. However, faith-based treatment options are sometimes not as well-known or highly publicized as secular programs. What follows are a few examples of addiction treatment programs that many people don’t realize have a spiritual orientation.
Teen Challenge USA
This intensive Christ-centered substance abuse recovery program is offered at more than 200 Christian rehab centers across the United States and in more than 100 countries around the world. Despite the name, Teen Challenge rehab services and coursework are available for people of all ages. The goal of the program is to help recovering addicts and alcoholics transform their lives through active, committed engagement in serious religious practice.
Celebrate Recovery
This Christian alternative to Alcoholics Anonymous deepens the spiritual aspects of the usual 12-step program to make it more specific to the needs and beliefs of practicing Christians. While Celebrate Recovery doesn’t provide a complete addiction treatment program, it does offer constructive and invaluable peer group experiences for people with substance abuse issues that are destroying their lives.
Reformers Unanimous Recovery
This faith- and Bible-based program offers recovery classes, phone-in hotlines and residential or outpatient treatment options through more than 800 churches across the United States. Reformers Unanimous personnel stress the healing power of Scripture, providing uplifting and inspirational services designed to complement more traditional forms of addiction treatment.
Jewish Alcoholics, Chemically Dependent Persons and Significant Others (JACS)
In New York City and the surrounding area, the JACS helps those suffering the effects of substance abuse to heal their wounds, restore their families and rescue their futures from the abyss. The JACS’s Jewish orientation is spiritual as well as cultural, and the unifying mission throughout its 75-plus facilities is to offer a safe and peaceful environment where Jewish men and women can find comfort and understanding when times are hard.
Holistic Treatment Programs
Alternative healing practices such as meditation, yoga, acupuncture and Tai Chi have become so common at addiction treatment facilities that many people have forgotten their spiritual roots. These mind-body techniques are powerful tools for restoring emotional balance and are flexible enough to adapt to any religion or system of belief, but they do have an unquestioned connection to Eastern spiritual traditions that is never completely lost. Nevertheless, many Christian rehab centers include holistic mind-body practices on their treatment menus, in recognition of their capacity to help regenerate wounded spirits.
Faith, Recovery and a Lifetime of Wellness
Addicts and alcoholics interested in faith-based recovery programs do have choices. Christian rehab centers are available in every state and in most American cities, and the dedicated professionals who work at these facilities have been helping men and women struggling with addiction get back on their feet for decades.
